How the distance is measured
The distance is the shortest path over the earth's surface between the two airports' coordinates, on the WGS-84 ellipsoid that GPS uses (computed with GeographicLib). It comes in kilometres, statute miles (1 mi = 1.609344 km) and nautical miles (1 nm = 1.852 km), the unit pilots use. Real flights follow airways and winds, so the distance flown is usually a little longer.
EU261 and UK261 measure "by the great circle route method": on a sphere, from the first departure to the final destination of the booking. The calculator shows that distance with the compensation band; the bands start at 1,500 and 3,500 km.
How the flight time is estimated
Gate to gate time = 48 minutes for taxiing, climb and approach + the great-circle distance at 847 km/h, rounded to 5 minutes. Both numbers are fitted to 8,609,021 scheduled US flights (2025-08…2026-07, US DOT / BTS T-100). Route pages show the real average times instead, each way, where the data has them.
