EU261 / UK261 rulesRegulation (EC) 261/2004, Regulation (EU) 2026/2202, UK retained version

How the numbers are worked out

  • Distance is measured on the WGS-84 ellipsoid with GeographicLib, between the airports' reference points. The EU261 band uses the great circle on a 6,371 km sphere, the method the regulation names; the two differ by up to about 0.5%.
  • Flight time, where US data has the route, is the average ramp-to-ramp (gate to gate) time of the scheduled flights in each direction. Elsewhere it is an estimate: 48 minutes plus the distance at 847 km/h, fitted to 8,609,021 US flights (2025-08…2026-07), rounded to 5 minutes.
  • Passengers, seats and flights count both directions over the latest twelve months (US data) or the latest calendar year (Eurostat). A route touching both the US and Europe shows the US figures and mentions Eurostat's. Eurostat names no airlines, and each European route is counted once, from the airport whose code comes first.
  • Passengers per airport come from the statistics office of the airport's country where one publishes them, else from Wikidata; each figure names its source and year. The offices count a little differently: BTS, ANAC and JAC scheduled flights only, Japan's MLIT transit passengers too, Australia's BITRE its smaller airports by the year to June. Where an office's figure is less than half of Wikidata's for the same or a later year, months are missing at the source (Eurostat's 2024 figure for Forlì has February only), and Wikidata's is shown.
  • CO2 is the DESNZ factor for an economy seat times the great-circle distance: under 500 km the domestic factor (0.22928 kg/km), up to 3,700 km short-haul (0.12576), beyond long-haul (0.11704), including radiative forcing; without it 0.13552 / 0.07435 / 0.06926.
  • Time differences compare the UTC offsets of both airports in mid-January and mid-July, so daylight saving shows.
